It follows Emil Halloran, a soldier out of the lowest floors of an arcology, through a war fought across dying colony worlds by an army that keeps telling its people the line is holding. The books are close, plainspoken, and cold, the texture of the ration bar and the count of the rounds, the friendships that hold a wall together, the dark jokes men make so they don't have to stop and look at the thing straight on. The violence is legible and it costs. Nobody gets heroic last words.

The series escalates downward, through the stages of a war that isn't going the way the men are told. Five books, one long descent, and a question underneath all of it: what do you fight for when you already know how it ends?

If you like your military SF grounded and your grimdark earned — Marko Kloos's Frontlines with the temperature turned down, Joe Haldeman's The Forever War with the alienation turned up — you'll be at home here.
